About Alan
Alan James Mann was born on November 2nd, 1939, during the Second World War.
He was born in the Norfolk city of Norwich and currently lives in Little Melton just outside Norwich. Alan survived the wartime Baedeker raids on Norwich in 1942 despite large losses of life in neighbouring streets near his family home in Suffolk Street, Norwich.
Alan and his wife Pam have three children - Karen who is a nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Nicola who is a Relate marriage counsellor in Cambridge and Richard who is a partner in Proffitt and Mann, a firm of solicitors in Lowestoft. Alan and Pam have nine grandchildren.
Alan's mother Ruth Gwendoline Mann (nee Garnham) is aged 102 and lives in The Cedars shelterd home off Albemarle Road in Norwich. His late father - Salem John Mann (1903-2001) was a signwriter and a renowned local artists (known as John Mann) who had an annual exhibition in Norwich Assembly Rooms. He was regularly featured on television, radio and in the Press. Alan has a brother - Graham - a retired printer who was co-founder of Norwich Colourprint (now Swallowtail Print).
From 1944 to 1951 Alan attended firstly the Bignold Shool and subsequently Angel Road and then St Augustine's Senior School in Norwich before moving onto the City of Norwich Grammar School (CNS) from 1951 to 1956. After leaving school, Alan became a junior clerk with the Norwich Union Insurance Society in Norwich and from 1957 until 1993 was mployed by the National Provincial Bank Ltd which became the National Westminster Bank which is now part of the Royal Bank of Scotland group. He began with the National Provincial Bank in St Benedict's Street, Norwich, as a junior clerk and worked for them in Boston, Lincoln, Brigg and Scunthorpe before returning to Norfolk in 1977.
He joined the junior management team at Brigg in 1971 and became a member of the full management team in Boundary Road, Norwich, in 1985. He was branch manager at Red Lion Street, Norwich, from 1988 to 1990 and St Benedict's Street, Norwich, from 1990 to 1993 before taking early retirement on the closure of the branch office.Over the years, Alan has been involved in various clubs and societies and was a Special Constable in Norwich Police from 1982 to 1985. He was a member of the City of Norwich School Old Boys Union from 1977 until recent years and was chairman for a three year period.
Alan is a member of the Friends of Little Melton Group and a member of Little Melton Church Choir until it disbanded. He remains an active member of Norwich Thorpe St Andrew Rotary Club which he has been a member of since 1988. He has held most of the posts within that club including that of president. Alan has also worked and supported the Priscilla Bacon Hospice in Norwich from 1995 as firstly a driver and later a driving co-ordinator. He is currently a volunteer helping regularly in the day unit, serving meals and chatting to patients.
